Raleigh’s Dentzel Carousel was built by the Pennsylvania Carousel Company about 1910. It was featured in their 1912 catalogue. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of their animal menageries and is one of only 14 Dentzel animal menageries still in operation in North America.

The finely detailed animals were hand carved and display the work of master carver Salvatore Gernigliaro. Several artisans worked on carving the animals but the master carver did the heads and expressive details. The animals are hollow on the inside. The individual carved pieces are assembled and held together with dowels and glues.
