The original paints are replicated with contemporary paints to match the exact colors that were used at the time of construction. Most of the animals have their original paints still intact. They are preserved for future reference in extensive documentation as well as sealed beneath the current paints under a protective sealer coat.

Between 1976 and 1982 a restoration was undertaken. Rosa Ragan, now a noted carousel restoration artist, began her career restoring the Dentzel carousel. She followed the advice from professional conservators on the best methods of restoration. The work of Rosa and her assistants established today’s standards for excellence in restoring antique carousel animals.
