Chavis Park’s Herschell Carousel Upon completing
the Dentzel carousel at Pullen Park, Rosa and her crew began restoration of the
Allan Herschell Carousel in Chavis Park. The Herschell carousel was built
between 1916 & 1920 in New York State. It is a completely different style
and contains all horses and ponies. The horses feature bright jewels that
glisten in the sun light as part of their harnesses. Horses and ponies allow
riders of all ages and sizes to have a good ride. Two beautiful chariots are
part of the carousel. The carousel was acquired by the WPA (Works Progress
Administration) in 1937 and installed in Chavis Park. The colorful carousel
features 14 picture panels center frame of the ride. It has a Wurlitzer band
organ that is in good operating condition.
