Chavis Park was a very popular park built for the African-American community during the days of segregation. It featured a miniature train, swimming pool and carousel. The baseball field hosted many outstanding athletes and drew fans from all across the state for games and other recreational events.

The Allan Herschell carousel has the documentation completed for application into the National Register of Historic Places.
